A Quick And Practical Guide To Caring For Dentures

SEPTEMBER 30, 2020

Dentures are invulnerable to dental decay. However, their cavity-proof nature does not mean that they do not require diligent maintenance. Properly caring for dentures will help them to serve you well for as long as possible. It will also prevent unpleasant issues like odors and discoloration on your replacement teeth. But how exactly should you look after your dentures? In this blog post, we will discuss some simple ways in which you can keep your prosthetic as clean and functional as possible.

Clean Them Every Day

Cleaning your full or partial dentures in Manchester each day will prevent them from accumulating bacteria and plaque that can lead to discoloration and odors. Here are a few tips that you can apply to your denture-cleaning routine.

  • Brush them thoroughly. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean all your prosthetic teeth, as well as the gum-colored base. Some toothbrushes are designed specifically to be used on dentures.
  • Do not use toothpaste. Most toothpastes are abrasive and might scratch your dentures. Use only products that are designed to care for dentures.
  • Regularly soak them. You should soak your dentures regularly in a cleaning solution. This is not a substitute for brushing them, but it can do much to keep your dentures fresh and odor-free.

Handle Them With Care

While dentures are quite durable, they are vulnerable to breakage if they are dropped. Therefore, when you take them out of your mouth, you should do so above a soft surface, such as a sink full of water or a folded towel.

Also, you should avoid extremely hard foods that might break your dentures. For example, you should never bite hard cardies or ice. If you decide to eat somewhat hard foods, such as raw vegetables, that is fine. However, do not bite down on them with your dentures’ front teeth. Instead, cut the food into small pieces before you eat it. Then, distribute it evenly on both sides of your mouth while you chew.

Store Them Properly

Allowing your dentures to dry out could cause them to lose their shape. Therefore, when they are not in your mouth, you should place them in water or a denture soaking solution. Make sure the water is not too hot; extreme temperatures could warp your dentures.

Attend Regular Dental Appointments

Even for patients who have no remaining natural teeth, regular dental visits are as important as ever. At your checkups, your dentist with examine your mouth and inspect your dentures. When necessary, they will reline (adjust) your dentures to ensure they continue to fit properly. Every 5 – 10 years or so, your dentist may recommend that you replace your dentures altogether.

Dentures offer a multitude of benefits, but you must take care of them in order to enjoy them to the full. The above tips can help you to keep your prosthetic teeth as clean and functional as possible.
